How it works
Solar thermal technologies (also known as active solar systems) involve the conversion of solar radiation(the sun)into heat and include the use of pumps or fans to actively transfer the heat to storage or for distribution directly to its intended use. The key component of any active solar system is the solar collector, which absorbs the sun’s radiant energy and transforms it into usable heat.
The process is simplistic, instead of using gas or electric heat to heat your domestic water or heating fluid on its own the medium is passed through your solar panels and whatever heat is available is absorbed and depending on your system is put into use or stored for future use. There are various means of transferring the heat, the most common is to have what is called a dual coil tank. A dual coil tank is exactly that, a tank with two heat exchange coils in it. One is run to your conventional heating system, like a natural gas boiler and the other is hooked up to your solar loop. There are many many different system configurations and depending on the end user and needs of the building determine what that system will look like.
